Consulate General of India, Jaffna, hosts 80th Independence Day Programme

  1. The Consulate General of India in Jaffna hosted a cultural programme at the Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre on 15 August 2026 to mark the 80th Independence Day of India.

  2.  As part of this year’s Independence Day Celebrations, CGI, Jaffna conducted a Madhubani painting workshop and a Viksit Bharat 2047 Painting Competition for Indian and Sri Lankan nationals at JTCC, where people, through art, brought to life their imagination as to how would India appear when it completes 100 years of its independence. To celebrate the 80th Independence Day, a special edition of Bharat ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz was conducted across the globe in which, Sri Lankans from the Northern Province enthusiastically participated, reflecting the strong people-to-people ties between the two countries. 

  3.  Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the India’s National Song, Vande Mataram, Consulate General of India, Jaffna organized a number of activities over this Anniversary year, including mass singing of Vande Mataram by Consulate officials, family members and friends of India and also a soulful rendition by the India Corner music students at JTCC. This year, the global campaign Har Ghar Tiranga, which invites every Indian to hoist the National Flag and to post a picture with the Tiranga, was also well received with vigorous participation in Northern Province. 

  4. During the evening programme, JTCC witnessed cultural performances of Indian art forms of Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Kalaripayattu, featuring the disciples of prominent Guru Mrs. Krishnapriya Jayagar and Guru Dr. Himaja Athulkumar from Kala Ankuram, Chennai, India. The top participants of the Bharat Ko Janiye quiz and the winners of the Viksit Bharat 2047 Painting Competition from the Northern Province were felicitated during the celebrations. The programme concluded with an exhibition titled Har Ghar Tiranga, which showcased the history and significance of the National Flag and the role that the National Song played in the Freedom Struggle of India.
