World Environment Day-2019

As a part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, the Consulate General of India in Jaffna had taken steps to plant trees in the Northern Province to coincide with the World Environment Day 2019.

Accordingly, Consul General Balachandran joined hands with Dr.Suren Raghavan, Hon’ble Governor of the Northern Province, who has initiated planting of 10000 trees on A9 road in the Northern Province to create a green corridor. At a function at Mankulam on A9 road this morning (5 June), the Governor, the Consul General, NPC Chairman Mr. CVK Sivagnanam, Jaffna Mayor His Worshipful Mr. Arnold, Killionochi Army commander, senior government functionaries planted tree saplings to inaugurate the project. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the world.

In continuation, at separate functions, Consul General Balachandran planted tree saplings at Agriculture, Engineering faculties of Jaffna University campus at Kilinochi, German Institute of Technology and Regional office of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Jaffna University Professor Mikunthan, Agriculture Department Director Sivakumar, Director of the German Institute, joined other faculty members, senior officials and students in planting hundreds of saplings. Students pledged to take care of the trees planted.
