Gandhi Cycle Rally

On the occasion of the World Bicycle Day (3rd June), the Consulate General of India in Jaffna took out a Gandhi Cycle Rally today as a part of a series of celebrations of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Hon’ble Chairman of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC), Mr. CVK Sivagnanam flagged off the Cycle Rally from the Gandhi Statue at Ariyalai, Jaffna. Over a hundred volunteers led by Jaffna Mayor His Worshipful Mr. Emmanuel Arnold rode bicycles over a stretch of five kms, ending the Rally at the Gandhi Statue in Cargills Square, Jaffna.

At both the venues, Consul General Balachandran garlanded the Gandhi Statues. Hon’ble NPC Chairman Mr.Sivagnanam, Jaffna Mayor His Worshipful Mr. Emmanuel Arnold, All Ceylon Gandhi Sewa Sangam President Prof.Sivakaran, Sarvodaya’s District Secretary Mr. Sriyogendra joined the Consul General in paying floral tributes. The students of the India Corner of the Consulate rendered favourite Bhajans of Gandhiji.

The Consul General and other special guests spoke on Gandhiji’s message demonstrated by his own simple life, natural way of living, his principle of self-sufficient villages and how bicycles fit in with Gandhian principles.
