PRESS RELEASE

1. The Consulate General of India in Jaffna celebrated the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as the grand finale of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by organizing a series of events in the Northern Province this day (2nd October 2020). The main celebrations were held at the Gandhi Statue, Cargills Square, Jaffna. Consul General Balachandran garlanded the Gandhi statue and paid floral tributes. Hon’ble Members of Parliament Mr.Siddharthan & Mr.Sritharan, Northern Provincial Council Chairman Mr.C V K Sivagnanam, former Members of Parliament Mr.Mavai Senathirajah, Mr.Saravanapavan & Mr.Suresh Premachandran, Jaffna University Vice Chancellor, Professors, Jaffna District GA, Education Secretary, Jaffna Municipal Commissioner, representatives of main political parties such as Mr.M.K.Shivajilingam, Mrs.Ananthi Sasitharan, Mrs.Umachandra Pragash, Mr.Gajadeepan, All Ceylon Gandhi Seva Sangam Assistant Secretary Mr.M.Santhan Sathiyakirthi and other prominent dignitaries similarly garlanded the Gandhi statue and paid floral tributes. Consul General Balachandran received a souvenir brought out by the All Ceylon Gandhi Seva Sangam through the hands of the Jaffna University Vice Chancellor. On behalf of All Ceylon Gandhi Seva Sangam, the Consul General gave away a prize to Miss Jegadeepa Jagadees of Maravanpulavu village for showing exemplary conduct in returning valuable jewellery found by her to the owners. Earlier, the Consul General followed by Prof S.Mohanadas, former VC of Jaffna University, All Ceylon Gandhi Seva Sangam Secretary Dr.Sathiya Moorthy and senior functionaries of Gandhi Community Centre garlanded the Gandhi statue at Ariyalai in Jaffna.

2. At Point Pedro, Jaffna, the celebrations were organized by the Consulate in association with the Point Pedro Urban Council. The Consul General, the Council Chairman Irudayarajah, Mr.M.K.Shivajilingam, Council members and local dignitaries garlanded the Gandhi statue.

3. The Consul General, Chairman Thavarasa and members of the Karaithuraipatru Pradeshiya Sabha, among others, garlanded the Gandhi statue at Mullaitivu.
