Consulate of India, Jaffna hosts 77th Republic Day Reception
1. The Consulate General of India in Jaffna hosted a Republic Day Reception at the Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre on 26 January 2026 to mark the 77th Republic Day of India.
2. In his address, the Consul General highlighted the significance of India’s Constitution and democratic values, and outlined India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to Sri Lanka under the Neighbourhood First policy, with a particular focus on the Northern Province. The Consul General highlighted India’s continued support to Sri Lanka, including through Operation Sagar Bandhu, and noted the Government of India’s recent announcement of a USD 450 million reconstruction and development assistance package, underscoring India’s long-term commitment to Sri Lanka’s recovery and resilience.
3. As part of the celebrations, a cultural programme was organised at the Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre, featuring a Mohiniyattam performance by Kalaimamani Smt. Rashmi Menon and a Kathakali performance by Kalashree Evoor Rajendra Pillai. The programme showcased classical Indian art forms drawn from Indian epics and cultural traditions, and was warmly received by the audience.
4. The reception witnessed the participation of over 250 guests, including the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, Shri Nagalingam Vedanayagam, Hon. Members of Parliament, political leaders, religious leaders, senior government officials, academicians, members of the security forces, Indian citizens, and friends of India, reflecting the strong people-to-people connect between India and Sri Lanka.
