          Consulate General of India with the support of Ministry of Culture, Government of India and in liaison with the of Ministry of Education, Culture Affairs, Sports & Youth Affairs, Northern Provincial Council held two cultural events in Jaffna and one cultural event in Killinochchi.  This initiative of the Consulate General of India is third in series to promote local cultural talents through cultural institutions in Northern Province who are involved in promoting Indian classical dance and music. 

            The first event titled “Iyarkai Adu Kalam” was held on 13 February 2014 in Jaffna performed by the students of Centre for Performing Arts.  The dance performance was in five parts signifying the importance of five necessities for the existence of humanity in this universe - Land, Water, Air, Sky and Fire.  Fifty students participated in the cultural event.  The theme was narrated through Bharatnatyam in a ballet style choreographed by the in-house talent at Centre for Performing Arts (Thirumarai Kalamandram).  It was attended by over 300 people at the Centre for Performing Arts auditorium.  Honourable Mayor of Jaffna was the Special Guest for the event.

            The second event titled “Kalai Koodal” was held on 1 March 2014 in Killinochchi performed by the students of Kaveri Kala Mandram and other cultural organisations based in Killinochchi.  The cultural event comprised of classical and folk dances.   110 students participated in the cultural event which was spread in eleven parts.  Hon’ble Minister for Education, Cultural and Sports, of Northern Provincial Council Mr. T. Kurukularaja was the Chief Guest for the event.   Hon. Minister also inaugurated a photo exhibition titled “Ilankai India Alagiyal” of Mr. P. Vasantharuban at the event.  Mr. Vasantharuban is pursuing M. Phil on the subject “Naaddar Kalai Marabu“ from India.  Over 100 photographs were displayed at the exhibition.  This was the first cultural event organised by the Consulate General of India, Jaffna in Killinochchi district of Northern Province and was well received by the residents of the district.   The 500 capacity Cooperative Hall, Killinochchi which was the venue was packed to the capacity.

            The third event titled “Shruthy Laya Ganam” was held on 9 March 2014 in Jaffna. Performed by the students of Bruntha Gaanalaya Foundation and Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts.  A noted feature of this event was the Veena performance by Mrs. Kokilathvani Vijayaraghavan, President of Bruntha Gaanalaya Foundation, Mandolin performance by Mr. S. Thinesh, Flute recital by Mr. S. Thiloshan.  The event comprised of Carnatic Vocal music and Bharathanatyam dance performances.  Mr.V.Mahalingam, Consul General of India was the Chief Guest.  Honourable Mrs. Yogeswary Patgunarajah, Mayor of Jaffna, Honourable E. Saravanabhavan, Member of Parliament and Mr. S. Sugirthan, Chairman, Vali North Pradeshiya Sabha graced the occasion.   The three hour event was held at Centre for Performance Arts auditorium and was well attended.    

            All the cultural events had an overwhelming response.
