INDEPENDENCE DAY OF INDIA – 15 August 2025 Address by Consul General Sai Murali S.

Honourable Governor of the Northern Province

Esteemed Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna

Esteemed Chief Secretary of Northern Province, respected Members of Parliament, distinguished dignitaries, government officials, fellow Indian citizens, friends of India, ladies and gentlemen,

Vanakkam. Namaste. Good evening.

It is a great honour for me to welcome you all to this celebration of India’s 79th Independence Day. Every 15th of August is an occasion not only to remember our hard-won freedom but also to renew our commitment to the values that define India – democracy, pluralism, inclusiveness, and progress.

This year, our celebrations carry special meaning. India today is redefining itself in many ways – confident, forward-looking, and deeply rooted in its civilisational values. The vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat – a self-reliant India – is guiding us towards strength and resilience in every sector, from technology and manufacturing to education and culture. It is a pathway that leads us to our larger national aspiration of building a Viksit Bharat – a developed India by 2047, when we will mark 100 years of independence.

Hon’ble President of India, in her Independence Day address, reminded us that “daughters are our pride”. This message resonates deeply with tonight’s celebration. We are honoured to host an all-women delegation of Bharatanatyam dancers from India. Their performance this evening is not only a tribute to our shared cultural heritage but also a symbol of women’s empowerment, talent, and leadership. It reflects how India’s daughters are shaping our nation’s progress – as artists, professionals, innovators, and leaders.

Bharatanatyam, one of India’s oldest classical dance traditions, embodies devotion, discipline, and creativity. When performed by this talented group of women artistes, it also speaks of a society moving forward with inclusiveness and respect for the contribution of women in every field.

As we celebrate India’s journey of independence, we also recognise the strong and enduring bonds with Sri Lanka, and particularly with the people of the Northern Province. India’s development partnership projects here – in housing, education, healthcare, and culture – are a reflection of our shared aspirations. Just as India strives towards self-reliance and development, we are committed to being a partner in the progress of our friends and neighbours.

To my fellow Indian citizens here in Northern Province, I convey my warm greetings on this proud day. May each of us carry the spirit of India – resilient, self-reliant, and forward-looking – wherever we are.

This evening, as we immerse ourselves in the beauty of Bharatanatyam, let us celebrate not only the independence of a nation, but also the empowerment of women, the strength of culture, and the promise of a brighter, more inclusive future.

On behalf of the Consulate General of India in Jaffna, I extend my warmest greetings on the 79th Independence Day of India. Jai Hind. Thank you. Nanri. Vanakkam.
